Today we went for our LOTR tour to Mt. Sunday. it was great! The weather stayed pretty clear for us so we got some nice views. My goodness it was windy though! We went on our tour in a massive converted 4x4 tour bus jacked up nice and high to go through the water. This was somewhere we could have got to on our own but it was nice to hear exactly where all the gates, the main hall and the riders were during the filming.
It was a bit of an easier day for us because the tour originated in Christchurch but picked us up next door to our camping spot in Mt. Somers around 11. Where they picked us up was also where they also stopped for lunch on the way back. Our guide Andre gave us some local info about the filming. One of his friends was John Rhys Davies (Gimli) stunt double. So he he had some good stories about some of the actors. They had screens on the van so we could see some of the locations where we were going. We also stopped along the way to take some pictures.
Mt. Sunday looked pretty tall from the bottom. I was surprised we could go right up to the top. The climb wasn't too bad as we stopped every so often for a chat or to look at photos. Volunteers from our group also hauled up replica weapons from the movie for photo ops.
I swear it looks really steep when you are at the bottom. Everything looks flatter in photos! It was fun posing with the weapons and flag.
All in all, a good tour. The rest of the day we spent at our campsite getting ready to leave for Lake Tekapo. We went to the little pub across the road for dinner that night. Very nice.
