In which the Stark family acquire a campervan

July 31

Today we picked up the campervan at Wilderness. I think we are looking forward to having somewhere to keep our stuff without having to unpack/repack every night. Not looking forward so much to not having nice hotel showers though. So the campervan seems big - on the inside too, not just the outside. It is really tall! I was really impressed that we have so much space for all our stuff. I think we brought too much so I wasn't sure we could fit it all in but no problems. Our empty bags fit in the cargo hold and we have cupboard space to spare.

The driving has been ok. Geoff says it feels a bit cumbersome but no major issues so far.  He said that when you start going downhill it's a bit like "unleashing the beast". One thing that we didn't think about was how much banging and creaking there is in a caravan. When we first set out we thought the kids were having some kind of fight in the back cause of all the banging. It was just things sliding around and falling off the tables. When you sit in the back you really feel all the turns in the road. I am a bit of a nervous rider. When we were on the way to Akaroa and the road is winding up the hills, I was worried we were going to go over the edge. I was hanging on to the arm rest so hard my arm was sore by the time we got there! This probably isn't one of the scary areas of the south island either.

Akaroa was a nice little town with French origins. We camped at a caravan park with a walking path down to town. We were on top of a hill so the way to town was downhill all the way but a steep climb back. Visited Akaroa Fish & Chips for a dinner. Great meal but big portions. Got there a little late to do much and we needed the time to unpack and get settled. Was a nice place to see at least.
