Got a bit of a late start today - wanted to check out a couple of shops in the town when they opened and we were still undecided as to which way we wanted to go first. We finally decided to head toward Edoras (aka Mount Sunday). The drive seemed a lot easier today (partially cause I sat in the back). We stopped for coffee in Rakaia and visited a cool playground. Fun for aduls too, and then headed out to Methven.
Very nice town with great people in the visitor centre. Geoff and I were having a discussion about Lord of the Rings Tours beforehand. I thought there was one we wanted to take and he said it we decided against it cause it was too much money. When we visited the I-site, they said they had a winter sale price so we decided to go for it. The lady in the shop said she had been on it before and it was really good. We continued down the road a bit to Mount Somers to camp. We are camped right in town but it's still kind of nice. It sort of feels like we are camped in the back garden of someone's house but in a good way. when we got here, we were the only ones but another small campervan arrived later. It was pretty foggy the first day but the next it cleared and we got a nice view of Mt. Somers.
Lots of bird song here. Nice song birds and some strange sounds that sound something like an electronic device having an error! Geoff thinks it might be the Magpies but since we can't see the birds making it, we're not too sure. There was a white faced heron on top of the tree next to us and a friendly chaffinch came to visit (and eat up some spare cornflakes).
A note on camping in New Zealand (for Canadians)
The campgrounds here have way more facilities. You expect the flush toilets and showers but here they all seem to have laundry facilities, a TV lounge, kitchen areas with ovens and sinks, toasters and kettles. No fire pits so far though. The caravan spots are all next to each other without trees between but since we are here in winter, privacy isn't really an issue. One nice thing is in the lounge there is a woodstove with a fire - very cozy. We played some ping pong and Foosball (Sam beat us both).
